California Car Accident Reports

A man died in an Orange County motorcycle accident the morning of September 30, 2009 on the 405 Freeway near the Goldenwest Street exit in Westminster, The Orange County Register reports. California Highway Patrol officials said the motorcyclist, who has not been identified, was riding a white Suzuki sport bike and hit the center divider. It is not known whether he swerved to avoid debris on the freeway or another vehicle before striking the divider. A white Volvo was also apparently involved in the crash. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

At a time when incidents of California nursing home abuse and negligence are rampant, a new study has found the government program that is meant to increase the level of scrutiny of poorly performing nursing homes still leaves out hundreds of troubled facilities. According to an Associated Press news report, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services identifies up to 136 nursing homes as "special focus" facilities that will be inspected more often because of their prior violations. But Government Accountability Office (GAO) investigators say that the number should actually be closer to 580 -- four times what it is right now.

An 11-year-old boy suffered critical injuries in a Ventura car accident the morning of September 22, 2009 after he was hit by a car on his way to school. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, the boy was on his way to Medea Creek School in Oak Park, California, when he was struck near the intersection of Doubletree Road and Hollytree Drive by 41-year-old Jill Kinder.

Aubrey Head, 60, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after his bicycle was struck by a car, which was driving out of a parking lot in El Monte, California. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car accident was reported on September 20, 2009 near the intersection of Peck Road and Woodville Drive. Head was apparently riding against traffic when a driver who was coming out of a supermarket parking lot struck him. The driver told police that he did not see Head on his bicycle. Head was transported to a local hospital and died during surgery, officials said.

Two people were injured in a San Francisco car accident involving a bus and a streetcar on September 22, 2009. According to a CBS News report, a 71 bus clipped an F-line streetcar with its mirrors. Both vehicles were apparently traveling in opposite directions near Market and Grant Streets. A passenger and driver suffered injuries, but it is not clear which vehicle they were on. Within two hours of that accident a Muni training coach crashed into a building in San Francisco's Japantown. No passengers were in the training coach and no injuries were reported as a result of this crash. Muni officials and San Francisco police are investigating both of these accidents.

Angel Celaya, 48, suffered serious personal injury in a workplace accident the afternoon of September 21, 2009 after he fell off a scissor lift. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Celaya was working in one of the buildings at Boeing's Huntington Beach campus when he fell off the lift. Huntington Beach firefighters responded to the call, but Celaya was pronounced dead just nine minutes after his fall.

Two people sustained personal injury after a rollercoaster at an Orange County amusement park malfunctioned on September 16, 2009. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, a cable snapped during a run of Knott's Berry Farm's Xcelerator ride injuring a 12-year-old boy who suffered cuts and another man who apparently sustained back injuries. Both were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Nine people were reportedly on the ride when the accident occurred.

California Health Department officials are looking into recent allegations of nursing home abuse based on a letter received by ABC7 News from Diana Harden. According to an ABC news report, Diana Harden mailed out the letter prior to killing her disabled daughter, Yvette, who was a resident at the Oakland Springs Health Center in Oakland, California and then turning the gun on herself. The letter apparently has details of verbal and physical abuse suffered by Yvette at the hands of the nursing home staff.

I was reading about the story of Linda Rivera, a teacher's aide who went into septic shock and suffered kidney failure after severe food poisoning linked to E. Coli-contaminated cookie dough.I According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, Rivera's plight began in May after she ate several spoonfuls of Nestle Toll House cookie dough. Federal health officials say Rivera was one of 10 food poisoning victims in the United States who developed a life-threatening complication from the E. Coli infection known as "hemolytic uremic syndrome."
