California Car Accident Reports

A man sustained injuries in a car accident in Orange County after he lost control of his Ford Explorer SUV, which was towing a camping trailer. The Orange County Register reports that the accident occurred the morning of November 27, 2009 on the northbound 241 toll road at Los Alisos Boulevard in Rancho Santa Margarita. The Explorer rolled over with the trailer. One person, a passenger, was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known. California Highway Patrol officials are looking into why the driver of the Ford Explorer lost control.

Two women sustained critical injuries in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of November 20, 2009 after their vehicles collided near a city intersection. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the accident occurred on Citrus Avenue near East Gladstone Street in Azusa when a Nissan pickup truck and a Dodge Neon collided. The Neon's driver, identified as a 51-year-old Covina woman, was transported to a local hospital as was the driver of the Nissan. Both women were listed in critical condition. Two girls and a boy – ages 16, 8 and 7 respectively – were passengers in the pickup and were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Two people sustained major injuries in a Ventura car accident on November 21, 2009 after the driver, 23-year-old Omead Afshar, lost control of the car and crashed into the median of Westlake Boulevard. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, Afshar was driving west on Westlake near Cascade Avenue when the car entered the center median and crashed into several trees. Both Afshar and his passenger, 24-year-old Melissa Lynch, were trapped in the car and had to be extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. Both were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries.

Carlos Gomez-Nila, 35, was killed in an Orange County car accident after he was struck by two vehicles while crossing the street. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Gomez-Nila was walking on Western Avenue near Tyler Avenue in Anaheim the night of November 22, 2009 when a Toyota Camry going north struck him. He apparently got up and tried to walk, but was then fatally hit by a Toyota RAV4 heading south on Western, Anaheim police said. Officials said the driver of the RAV4 saw the pedestrian and tried to swerve out of the way but failed to do so. Gomez-Nila died at the scene.

As products liability attorneys, we know that the makers of defective products often drag their feet on product recalls even when they have known for several years that those products could cause serious personal injury or even death to their unsuspecting consumer. Here's a perfect example of what I'm talking about. Maclaren, a manufacturer of strollers, agreed to a voluntary recall earlier this month, of all models of its products sold as far back as 1999 admitting that the fingers of 12 children were cut off by the stroller's hinges when they were opened or closed. What we're just hearing about now is that Maclaren knew about its product defects at least for the last five years, but did absolutely nothing about it. According to an article in the New York Post, Maclaren is now facing a fine of $1 million or more because they failed to report this potential hazard to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Daniel Ornelas, 41, was seriously injured in a Portland car accident after his bicycle was hit by a car at a Gresham intersection. According to a news article in the Portland Tribune, Ornelas was riding his bike north on Southeast 187th Avenue and was crossing Stark Street in a marked crosswalk when a westbound vehicle on Stark hit him the afternoon of November 4, 2009. One of the vehicles stopped and yielded right-of-way for Ornelas, but a vehicle driven by 52-year-old Brian Cairns did not stop and struck Ornelas.

The bicyclist sustained serious head injury after he was knocked off his bike. Ornelas was apparently not wearing a helmet. He was transported to a local hospital. No arrests have been made in connection with this car accident pending a police investigation.

A woman and her dog were injured in a car accident in Orange County after her Toyota Camry slammed into a telephone pole the morning of November 16, 2009 at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Glassell Street in Orange, California. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the woman and the dog had to be extricated from the vehicle. The injured woman was taken to a local hospital. The dog sustained an injured leg and was taken to a veterinarian by firefighters.

Jorge Perez, 39, sustained injuries in an Orange County car accident the morning of November 18, 2009 after his motorcycle was struck by a Toyota Sequoia SUV on the southbound 57 Freeway in Brea, California. The Orange County Register reports that the accident occurred near East Lambert Road when Perez's 2001 Suzuki motorcycle was struck by the Toyota in the HOV and fast lanes. Perez was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the Sequoia was not injured.

A 26-year-old man was fatally injured in a San Bernardino, California motorcycle accident after he lost control of his 2005 Kawasaki Ninja and crashed into a garage the afternoon of November 17, 2009, the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports. The man, who is yet to be identified, was riding his Kawasaki near a friend's house when he lost control and crashed into the garage door. The incident occurred in Rancho Cucamonga, California. The man was not wearing a helmet and sustained severe injuries. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department's Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into this fatal motorcycle crash.
