Two people were injured in an Orange County car accident after a small school bus and a Toyota Camry collided at a street intersection in Anaheim, California. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the accident occurred at the intersection of Broadway and Olive Street when the northbound Camry broadsided the Anaheim City School District bus. One child was on the bus, but the child wasn't injured. The bus crashed into a sign post and came to a stop while the Camry continued northbound and came to rest about half a block north on Olive. The driver of the Camry and a child who was a passenger in the car were taken to the hospital with injuries. The school bus driver was not injured.

I'm extremely relieved that this accident did not result in major injuries to those involved, given the intensity and the point of impact of this collision. I wish the two injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Orange County Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 30 fatalities and 2,006 injuries involving car accidents in Anaheim. In Orange County as a whole, 178 deaths and 14,185 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007.

It is indeed fortunate no one was catastrophically injured or killed in this school bus accident. However, this newspaper report does not provide much information about how or why this horrific collision occurred. This was a broadside collision at an intersection. Who had the right-of-way at the intersection? One of the drivers apparently failed to yield right-of-way to the other, which resulted in the collision. Did any one of the drivers run a red light? Was there a dangerous condition on this roadway, which may have caused or contributed to this collision?

Car Accident Liability Issues

If the driver of the school bus was at fault for this accident, then the injured victims may be able to file a claim for compensation against the school district to cover medical expenses, lost wages and other damages. If a dangerous condition on the roadway caused this crash, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could be held liable. Please remember that any claim against a governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury. An experienced and knowledgeable Orange County personal injury lawyer will investigate all aspects of the accident, help the victims secure fair compensation and explain how their car insurance policy will apply to different car collision cases.
