Wrongful death lawsuit involving singer and actress, Brandy Norwood, has settled with the family of Awatef Aboudihaj, who died after her car was rear-ended by Brandy's Range Rover in Los Angeles December 2006. According to settle documents obtained by E! News, Aboudihaj's two children -- Marwan and Kareem Mohammed -- will each receive $300,000 as part of the settlement.
Three other lawsuits were filed in connection with the multi-car accident involving Brandy. One was filed by Aboudihaj's husband and the boy's father, Marouane Hdidou, who has turned down a $1.2 million settlement offer. Another $50 million claim by Aboudihaj's parents was also filed and a third claim was filed by Donald Lite, who said he sustained serious and permanent personal injuries as a result of that car accident. The lawsuit filed by the parents is facing an uphill battle because under California law, only the husband and not the parents of a victim is allowed to sue.
The actress has said that another motorist, Mallory Ham, was negligent and caused the chain reaction car crash. California Highway Patrol officials recommended that a misdemeanor manslaughter charge be filed against Brandy, but prosecutors did not do that due to lack of evidence. At the time, California Highway Patrol officials said that the actress' 2007 Range Rover failed to slow down in traffic and that Brandy was doing 65 mph when her SUV struck another car that in turn was hit by Ham’s car.
The settlement is probably a good way for Brandy to put the worst day of her life (so far) behind her. However, the two other lawsuits are pending. The lawsuit filed by the parents of the deceased victim is not a threat really, but the one filed by the woman's husband is still pending. It will be interesting to see what course that takes.
