The Dayton Daily News reports that June Henry, cleared in death of Lakota East student April Phan, may return later this year.

Henry found herself in one of the most feared situations for any bus driver. As she was driving her special needs bus one morning a young woman, April Phan aged 15, wandered into the path of the bus. Unable to react in time, Henry struck her.

The trauma from the accident resulted in head injuries and ultimately death for young Phan. As the legalities of the situation ensued, Henry was ultimately found to be not at fault for the accident. She had no reasonable way to avoid the contact.

Now Henry is making the tough decision whether or not to return. Petermann Safety Director Keith Harms said Henry, 61, commented that "she is still has a desire to come back, and she wants to come back toward the end of the year. She doesn’t want to end an otherwise stellar career this way for something that wasn’t her fault. She's a very strong person with great family support."

If Henry would return, she would be subject to monitoring by a state trainer to make sure her skills are still sharp and her mental state adequate for proper operation of the vehicle.

One takeaway from this story is just how quickly an accident can occur, even if you have as sterling a record as Henry. If you find yourself on either side of a bus accident, be certain to secure a skilled bus accident lawyer in your area.
