A 12-year-old boy was injured in a San Bernardino car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the hit-and-run accident occurred at Baseline Road and Kellogg Avenue in Twentynine Palms the night of April 27, 2012. Officials say the boy was riding a scooter when a pickup truck struck him and drove away. The young victim has been listed in critical but stable condition. The authorities tracked down 42-year-old Twentynine Palms resident, Dennis Terry Martinez, and arrested him on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in injury.
My heart goes out to the young victim of this hit-and-run car accident. I wish him the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.
San Bernardino Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), two people were killed and two were injured in Twentynine Palm pedestrian accidents. During that same year, 39 fatalities and 440 injuries occurred as a result of San Bernardino County pedestrian accidents.
Based on this news report, the driver of the pickup struck a 12-year-old boy and drove away leaving him lying on the roadway with critical injuries. Unconscionable! Not only is it inhumane and irresponsible to leave the scene of an injury car accident, but it is also illegal under California law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident." I'm relieved to note that the driver in this case was apprehended.
Holding Dangerous Drivers Accountable
Pedestrian accident victims or their families would be well advised to contact an experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. Compensation may be available for medical bills, hospitalization, pain and suffering, and other related damages. A skilled car accident attorney will better inform families in such cases about how their own auto insurance policy applies to an incident where the suspect is not found, or, in a crash where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
