A car accident in Los Angeles caused serious injuries to a driver on the 60 Freeway on July 22, 2010. The San Gabriel Valley Tribune reports that the major injury collision occurred when the driver of a box truck struck an Audi A4 that was stopped on the freeway shoulder. The driver of the Audi sustained serious injuries to his head, pelvis and chest. Officials are looking into why the driver of the box truck lost control and whether the driver of the Audi was ejected from the vehicle on impact. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to this injured victim and his family. I hope he recovers quickly and completely. He and his family will be in my prayers.
Car Accidents
In Los Angeles County, 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents, in 2008, according to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County, 121 people died and 4,683 were injured as a result of car accidents in 2008.
Causes and Compensation Issues
It is not clear based on this report how this crash occurred. What caused the driver of the box truck to lose control? Was he or she impaired, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent at the time? Was the driver of the box truck on-the-job? Was the driver of the Audi ejected from the vehicle or was he helped out of the vehicle by a Good Samaritan? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred and why.
If this accident is determined to have been caused by the box truck driver, then the driver as well as his or her employer could be held liable in this case. If the Audi driver's injuries were caused as the result of an auto product defect such as seatbelt failure, then the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective auto product could also be held liable.
