A 19-year-old man was killed in an Orange County car accident early morning on November 1, 2009 after the car he was a passenger in crashed with another vehicle at a Garden Grove street intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the two cars collided at the intersection of Orangewood and Faye avenues. Both cars rolled over trapping two passengers. Both were critically injured, but one later died in the hospital. Apparently, there were seven teens in two cars. Three, including the teen who suffered fatal injuries, were transported to the hospital. Garden Grove police do not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in this fatal car accident.
I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of this young man for their heartbreaking loss. They will be in my prayers.
Garden Grove Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), seven fatalities and 837 injuries were reported in Garden Grove as a result of car accidents. In Orange County as a whole, 178 deaths and 14,185 injuries were reported during the same period as a result of car accidents.
Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why this fatal car accident occurred. It is possible one of the drivers may have been speeding, distracted or driving recklessly. In many such accidents occurring at a street intersection, the main cause for the accident is invariably a driver who failed to yield right-of-way, ran a red light or both.
Car Accident Laws and Liability Issues
Running a red light is a serious violation of California law. There are various California Vehicle Code sections that are part of what we commonly refer to as "rules of the road." These code sections address motorists' behavior at intersections, especially those controlled by traffic signals. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: "A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown."
The at-fault driver could be held liable for the accident and resulting serious injuries in this Garden Grove car accident. The family of the young man who was killed would be well-advised to retain the services of a skilled Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will keep up with the official investigation and make sure that the family's legal rights are protected.
