My heart goes out to the family and friends of Sergio Cifuentes Perez for their devastating loss. Apparently Perez was found lying in the middle of the road by a passerby. Police officials say Perez had been knocked off his shoes and believe that he must have been hit at a speed of 50 to 60 mph. Tragic! Please keep Perez's grieving family in your thoughts and prayers. I truly hope the driver who struck Perez and left the scene is quickly apprehended and bought to justice.

Fresno Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 11 deaths and 135 injuries were reported involving pedestrian accidents in Fresno. In Fresno County as a whole, 20 people died and 197 were injured as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.

Law Relating to Hit-and-Run

It is illegal in the state of California for drivers to leave the scene of an injury accident. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."

In such cases, it would be in the best interests of deceased accident victims to seek the counsel of an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights are protected. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. A skilled car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims or their families about how their auto insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run collision or to an incident involving an at-fault motorist who is uninsured or underinsured.
