Seven people were injured in a chain-reaction Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, was triggered by at least two suspected drunk drivers. According to an Associated Press news report, the injury collision occurred the morning of August 8, 2010, when a minivan hit the center divider on the 405 connector to the 110 Freeway in Carson. Three of those injured are said to be in critical condition. Two of the drivers involved in this four-car collision have been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
My heart goes out to the many victims and their families involved in this catastrophic accident. I wish them all a complete recovery.
Los Angeles Car Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 10 fatalities and 447 injuries in Carson as a result of car accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year. Also, countywide, 258 deaths and 4,832 injuries were the result of DUI collisions in 2008.
California DUI Laws
California law prohibits the operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): "It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle."
Compensation Issues
In such cases, it would be in the best interests of injured victims to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the investigation and make sure that the negligent parties are held liable for their actions. Drivers who are found guilty of DUI may be held criminally responsible, as well as financially responsible to the victims, for their actions.
Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, and even cost of long-term care in cases where the injuries are catastrophic. An experienced car accident attorney will also be able to advise victims about how their car insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault parties are uninsured or underinsured.
