Five people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident that involved four vehicles. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the injury collision occurred the morning of August 15, 2010 at the intersection of Burbank Boulevard and Vesper Avenue. Three of the five injuries were considered serious and all five required medical attention. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
I am relieved to hear that no one was killed in this street intersection collision. I wish all the injured victims here the very best for a quick and complete recovery. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 268 fatalities and 25,588 injuries were reported due to car accidents in Los Angeles. Also, countywide, 667 people were killed and 52, 229 people were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Fault and Liability
Based on this news report, it appears that this accident occurred at a street intersection. According to California Vehicle Code section 21800 (a): "The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway." At this time it is not clear which one of the drivers failed to yield right-of-way. Such crashes could also occur as a result of one of the drivers running a red light. I trust officials are closely investigating this case in order to determine who was at fault here.
In these types of accidents, injured victims could seek compensation from the at-fault party to cover medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other related damages. Accidents involving multiple vehicles and numerous injuries can become complicated. It is in the best interests of injured parties to not speak with the insurance companies and attorneys of the other parties involved without first consulting their own attorney. It is also important to not sign any agreements without contacting a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will advise victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
