Timothy Kay, a motorcycle officer with the Los Angeles Police Department was seriously injured in a Los Angeles car accident after he collided with another vehicle on the 5 Freeway on November 7, 2009. According to The Bakersfield Californian, Kay was headed north on the 5 freeway near the Tejon Summit, when he collided with the left rear of a 2001 Chevy pickup truck traveling on the number two lane. California Highway Patrol officials say Kay lost control of his motorcycle and was ejected. He suffered a broken right arm, cuts on his forehead and a major cut on the back of his head. He was taken to an area hospital. The driver of the pickup was identified as Joel Lopez. Kay is said to be in stable condition and recovering from his injuries.
I'm extremely relieved that Timothy Kay did not suffer any catastrophic injuries in this motorcycle-car crash. I wish Kay the very best for a quick and complete recovery from his injuries. He will be in my prayers.
Motorcycle Accidents in Los Angeles
According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 32 fatalities and 1,158 injuries were reported in the city of Los Angeles as a result of California motorcycle accident cases. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 85 deaths and 2,792 injuries were reported involving motorcycle accidents in 2007. Also, countywide, 712 people died and 56,475 people were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report, it is not very clear who was at fault for this accident. In some cases, motorcycle accidents occur because drivers do not see them on the freeway and end up cutting them off or driving into their path. If Lopez was at fault for this accident, he could be held liable for Kay's medical expenses, loss of earnings, pain and suffering and other damages. The news account does not say if Kay was on duty at the time of this injury accident. If that was the case, he would also be entitled to worker's compensation benefits to cover his medical expenses and loss of wages.
