Jorge Perez, 39, sustained injuries in an Orange County car accident the morning of November 18, 2009 after his motorcycle was struck by a Toyota Sequoia SUV on the southbound 57 Freeway in Brea, California. The Orange County Register reports that the accident occurred near East Lambert Road when Perez's 2001 Suzuki motorcycle was struck by the Toyota in the HOV and fast lanes. Perez was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the Sequoia was not injured.

I sympathize with Jorge Perez, who was hospitalized with injuries in this car accident. I'm relieved to hear that he did not suffer major injuries. He will be in my prayers.

Orange County Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), five injuries were reported in Brea as a result of California motorcycle accidents. In Orange County as a whole, 24 deaths and 752 injuries occurred in 2007 as a result of motorcycle accidents. Also, in Orange County, car accidents claimed 178 deaths and caused 14,185 injuries during the same year.

Based on this news report, it's not clear how or why this accident occurred. It is of course, possible this accident was the result of a driving error committed by Perez. However, if I were a family member of the injured victim, I would want to confirm this collision was not caused by the negligence on the part of someone else. There are still many questions here that need to be answered. How did the Sequoia happen to hit the motorcycle? Was the driver of the Toyota SUV intoxicated or distracted at the time of the accident? Was he going too fast, given the conditions on the freeway? Was the driver of the SUV negligent in any other way? If the driver of the Toyota is determined to have been negligent, he could be held liable for Perez's injuries. In such cases, victims may be able to seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost earnings, cost of hospitalization and other related damages.
