A man sustained injuries in a car accident in Orange County after he lost control of his Ford Explorer SUV, which was towing a camping trailer. The Orange County Register reports that the accident occurred the morning of November 27, 2009 on the northbound 241 toll road at Los Alisos Boulevard in Rancho Santa Margarita. The Explorer rolled over with the trailer. One person, a passenger, was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known. California Highway Patrol officials are looking into why the driver of the Ford Explorer lost control.
It seems to me, based on this news report, that no one sustained major injuries in this SUV rollover crash. That is indeed very fortunate. SUV rollover accidents are often deadly or cause major injuries. I wish the young man who was hospitalized the very best for a quick and complete recovery.
Orange County Car Accidents
According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 62 injuries involving car accidents in Rancho Santa Margarita, California. In Orange County as a whole, 178 fatalities and 14,185 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in 2007. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 10,000 traffic accident fatalities occur each year as a result of rollover accidents. A number of these rollover crashes involve SUVs.
Rollover and Roof Crush
Rollover crashes can be deadly or cause catastrophic injuries because of their sheer intensity. Ford SUVs in particular, are involved in many such accidents because these vehicles have the propensity to tip over even at lower speeds due to their high center of gravity and low track width. Ford SUVs -- including the Explorer, Expedition and the Excursion – are also notorious for poor roof strength. This means that the roof can cave in when the SUV overturns, crushing occupants and causing catastrophic injuries such as traumatic brain injuries or spinal cord injury.
In this particular case, it is not clear what caused the Explorer to roll over. However, in any car accident where there have been injuries or damages, victims would be well-advised to contact a reputed Orange County auto product liability attorney, who has successfully handled cases involving Ford SUV rollover accidents. Depending on the nature of the injuries, victims may seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and even long-term care if the injuries are catastrophic.
