Raymond Oren Reiter, 39, was killed in a Riverside car accident after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck that turned left in front of him. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, Reiter was riding north on Grand Avenue when a 2002 Chevy S-10 pickup turned left into a driveway from the southbound lanes of Grand Avenue. The 28-year-old woman who was driving the pickup truck was not injured. Reiter was taken to an area hospital where he died soon after the accident.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Raymond Oren Reiter for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

Riverside Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), five fatalities and 92 injuries were reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in Riverside. In Riverside County, 41 deaths and 562 injuries occurred in 2007 involving motorcycle accidents.

In this case, based on the newspaper report, it appears that the driver of the Chevy pickup truck made an unsafe left turn causing the fatal
motorcycle accident. It seems to me that the driver of the truck failed to yield right-of-way to Reiter.

California Vehicle Code section 21801 (a) states the following requirements for drivers making a left turn or a U-turn: "The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety."
