Elfego Lozano-Nicolas, 39, has died from critical injuries he suffered in a Santa Ana car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the night of January 20, 2012 in the 100 block of South Broadway. Lozano-Nicolas was hit by a pickup truck, possibly a Toyota Tundra, with a ladder rack and ladders on top. The truck also had blue lettering running the length of the truck. The pickup's hubcap fell at the scene of the crash. The driver did not stop. Lozano-Nicholas was taken to a local trauma center where he died the day after the incident. If you have any information about this fatal hit-and-run crash, please contact Santa Ana police at 714-245-8701.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Elfego Lozano-Nicolas for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol's traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run car accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions statewide.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the pickup truck hit the bicyclist and then fled the scene without even stopping to help the critically injured victim. Lozano-Nicolas was found on the roadway unconscious. The driver basically fled leaving the victim exposed to further danger. I hope officials apprehend whoever committed this appalling act and prosecute him or her to the fullest extent of the law.

Justice for Victims

If you have any information about this driver or the suspect, please visit our dedicated hit-and-run web site at www.hitandrunreward.com to offer an anonymous tip and to become eligible to receive a $1,000 reward. This site is part of our effort to partner with the community and help our local law enforcement officials apprehend these hit-and-run drivers.

Families that have lost loved ones in hit-and-run collisions would be well advised to contact an experienced Santa Ana personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition on the roadway caused or contributed to the accident. If that was the case, the city or governmental entity responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable. Please remember that any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a governmental entity must be filed within 180 days of the incident.

A bicyclist was injured in a Riverside County car accident which police say, involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the DUI collision occurred along the 300 block of East Seventh Street in San Jacinto, the afternoon of January 10, 2012. Officials say Timothy Christopher Jones, 31, was under the influence of alcohol when he struck the bicyclist. The victim of this bicycle accident suffered a broken leg. Jones was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim of this Riverside bicycle accident. I wish this person the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Riverside DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), four people were killed and 16 were injured in alcohol-related crashes in the city of San Jacinto. During that same year, there were 87 fatalities and 986 injuries reported as a result of Riverside County DUI collisions.

Drunk Driving Laws

Based on this news report, the 31-year-old driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): "It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle." The same section also states that it is illegal for drivers to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 percent or higher.

Liability Issues

If it is determined that Jones was under the influence, in addition to facing criminal charges, he can be held financially responsible for the victim's injuries and damages. In such cases, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Bicycle accident victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of financially pursuing drunk drivers. For more information about the dangers of driving under the influence, please visit the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) web site at www.madd.org.

A 12-year-old boy was injured in a San Diego car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The San Diego Union Tribune, the hit-and-run collision occurred at the intersection of South 37th Street and National Avenue in the Mountain View neighborhood, the evening of December 24, 2011. Officials say the boy was crossing the street on his bicycle when the car struck him. He sustained a broken leg. The motorist left the scene of the crash. Officials are searching for the driver, who they say, is expected to face felony hit-and-run charges.

My heart goes out to the boy injured in this San Diego hit-and-run car accident. I wish him the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

San Diego Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), San Diego bicycle accidents claimed the lives of six people and caused 525 injuries. Countywide, nine fatalities and 972 injuries occurred due to bicycle accidents, during that same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, the driver of the car hit the 12-year-old boy and left him lying on the roadway with broken bones, exposed to further injury. Appalling! It is the duty of a motorist to remain at the scene of the car accident regardless of whose fault the accident was. In this case, officials say the boy rode into traffic lanes. That does not excuse the driver from leaving the injured victim at the scene and driving away. Had the driver stopped at the scene, he or she may not have faced any criminal charges. Now, the driver is facing a felony hit-and-run charge.

California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: "The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident."

Holding Hit-and-Run Drivers Accountable

The family of a child injured in a hit-and-run car accident would be well advised to contact an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation to protect their legal rights and best interests. A skilled car accident attorney will inform families in such cases about how their own auto insurance policy applies to an incident where the suspect is not found, or, in a crash where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.

Los Angeles is home to millions of people and thousands of bicyclists, which can create countless bicycle accidents. However, something is being done to alleviate traffic accidents and bicycle riders injuries on Spring St. A brand new bicycle lane painted green will help to direct motor and bicycle traffic. The bright green bicycle lane on Spring Street is aimed at reducing collisions and helping cyclists feel safer navigating downtown Los Angeles.

Two-wheeled traffic is on the rise and won't be stopping any time soon, so making cyclists safer is the city's top priority for the roads. Having a clear, visible border between motorists and cyclists will get rid of right of way issues, collisions, and possibly encourage more people to use their bike instead of spending money on costly fuel and polluting Los Angeles' air even further.

At 1.5 miles long - from Cesar Chavez Avenue to 9th Street - the lane is the first in downtown and the first full-color lane in the city.

The lane is 6 feet wide and next to a 4-foot buffer zone, leaving an 8-foot parking lane on the west side of the street. Buses are allowed to cross over the buffer and green lane to make a stop but are not permitted to drive along stretches within the area, city officials said. This will allow for ample parking, safer commutes on bicycles, and a clear separation on the road.

Los Angeles is becoming more and more sound when it comes to bicycling, and its CicLAvia event this Sunday is a testament to the city's commitment to encourage cycling. The green bicycle lane will be 100% active this Monday after the event. Cycling advocates say they hope to extend the lane to Venice Boulevard near the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Outside of avoiding debris or making a left turn, cyclists will be required to stay within the green lane for their safety. The street can be extremely busy, so keeping cyclists and motorists apart is crucial. The lane might also benefit downtown businesses because bicyclists often ride on sidewalks, sometimes creating a hazard for pedestrians.

The green lane is part of the city's master plan for a 1,680-mile bicycle network and more than 200 miles of new routes every five years. If you've been in a bicycle accident or would like a free consultation regarding an accident of any kind, please give us a call at 1-866-990-8787. Guilty parties need to be held accountable for their actions. We can help you get the justice you deserve.

Romeo Jimenez-Zavaleta, 35, was killed in an Orange County car accident after he was hit by an OCTA bus. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal bicycle accident occurred at the intersection of Paseo de Valencia and Alicia Parkway in Laguna Hills, the evening of November 12, 2011. Police say the bicyclist was riding across Alicia in the westbound crosswalk when an Orange County Transportation Authority bus turned right and struck him. Jimenez-Zavaleta was transported to an area hospital where he died. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Romeo Jimenez-Zavaleta. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Orange County Bicycle Accident Statistics

There were no fatalities but eight injuries occurred involving bicycle accidents in Laguna Hills in 2009, according to California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Orange County as a whole, bicycle accidents claimed 12 lives and injured 1,199 people, during the same year.

Bicycle Laws

Based on this news report, the bicyclist was riding his bike in a crosswalk at the time of the crash. It is not against California law to ride a bicycle in a crosswalk. California Vehicle Code Section 21650 says that "Upon all highways a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half of the roadway, except as follows:" subsection (g) states that "This section does not prohibit the operation of bicycles on any should or a highway, on any sidewalk, on any bicycle path within a highway, or along any crosswalk or bicycle path crossing, where the operation is not otherwise prohibited by this code or local ordinance."

Liability Issues

I trust authorities are looking into whether the bus driver was distracted, inattentive, impaired, or otherwise negligent here. In cases involving negligence or wrongdoing, at-fault motorists can be held liable for the victim's wrongful death. Victims' families in such cases would be well advised to retain the services of an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the investigation and make sure their best interests and legal rights are protected.

A female bicyclist sustained life-threatening injuries in an Orange County car accident after she was struck by a vehicle, the afternoon of November 3, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury bicycle accident occurred on Santiago Canyon Road at Lomas Peak Road in Orange. Officials say the bicyclist, who was in the bike lane, and a Lexus were both traveling eastbound on Santiago Canyon Road. For unknown reasons, the bicyclist made a 90-degree turn in front of oncoming traffic and was struck by the driver. Officials say the Lexus was traveling at 50 mph, which is the speed limit in the area. The severely injured bicyclist was transported to an area trauma center. Officials say she was wearing a helmet. The driver and passenger in the Lexus remained at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to this injured woman, who is fighting for her life. I pray that she makes it through her injuries and wish her the very best for a full recovery.

Orange County Bicycle Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 65 injuries occurred involving bicycle accidents in the city of Orange. In Orange County as a whole, 12 people died and 1,199 were injured due to bicycle accidents, during the same year.

What Caused This Injury Crash?

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to how or why this tragic collision occurred. There are several unanswered questions here. Why did the bicyclist turn in front of oncoming traffic? Were there other eyewitnesses to this incident? Was the driver of the Lexus under the influence, distracted, inattentive or otherwise negligent? Did a dangerous or defective roadway cause or contribute to this car versus bicycle accident? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Lexus is determined to have been at fault, he or she can be held liable for the bicyclist's injuries. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.

If a dangerous or defective roadway condition caused the accident, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury claim against a public entity must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.

Omar Gomez, 27, of Pomona, was killed in a Chino Hills car accident after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the morning of October 8, 2011 on Carbon Canyon Road near Fairway Drive. Officials say Gomez was hit by a 23-year-old man driving a 1995 Acura, and that the driver may have looked away from the road momentarily before he struck Gomez. Alcohol or speed does not appear to be factors in this fatal collision. Gomez was transported to an area hospital where he died from his injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Omar Gomez for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities but seven injuries involving bicycle accidents in Chino Hills. In San Bernardino County as a whole, five people were killed and 279 were injured as a result of bicycle accidents, during the same year.

What Caused this Fatal Crash

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to how or why this fatal bicycle crash occurred. Officials say, based on preliminary investigations, the driver of the Acura may have looked away from the roadway. However, it is not clear what caused the distraction or inattention on the part of the driver. Was he talking on a cell phone? Was he texting at the time? Was he distracted by someone or something in or outside the vehicle? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here.

Fault and Liability

If the driver is determined to have been at fault, he could be held liable for Gomez's wrongful death. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is determined, families of deceased victims can seek compensation to cover damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. An experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer will advise victims' families in such cases about their legal rights and options.

A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition on the roadway may have caused or contributed to the incident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can be held liable. Please remember that any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a California governmental entity must be properly filed within 180 days of the incident.

Zachariah Houck, 12, was fatally injured in a San Bernardino car accident after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle. According to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, the fatal car accident occurred at the intersection of Joshua Road and Mesquite Street in Hesperia, the evening of August 13, 2011.

California Highway Patrol officials say Zachariah was riding his bike south on Joshua Road when he did not stop for a stop sign at the intersection. A 2000 Lincoln Navigator, which was being driven by 51-year-old Gregory Peery, hit the boy who died at the scene. The boy's father, Daniel Houck, says his son was riding with a group of friends when he got hit. None of the other children was injured.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Zachariah Houck for their sudden and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to CHP's 2009 Statewide Integrated traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but five injuries reported as a result of bicycle accidents in Hesperia. In San Bernardino County as a whole, five people died and 279 were injured as a result of bicycle accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Tragic Crash?

Based on this news report, officials are saying that Zachariah may have failed to stop at the stop sign. However, it is not clear why this child alone got hit and the others escaped. It is a traffic violation to run a stop sign. Bicyclists, under California law, have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles, which is why it is imperative for parents to educate their children about the rules of the road before allowing them to ride a bike, even if it is only to and from school or inside their neighborhood.

In this case, I trust investigators are looking into other factors that may have played a part. How fast was the driver of the Lincoln going? Did he have a stop sign at the intersection? Did he stop? Was there a dangerous condition at the intersection, which may have caused or contributed to this tragic accident?

Liability Issues

Family members of deceased victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether a dangerous roadway condition caused or contributed to this incident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining this roadway could be held liable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a public entity must be properly filed within 180 days of the incident.

A 4-year-old child was injured in a Riverside car accident after a driver struck his bicycle. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the major injury collision occurred the night of July 14, 2011, at the intersection of Palm Drive and Dillon Road in Desert Hot Springs. Officials say the child was transported to an area hospital with critical injuries, but they have not released details about the circumstances of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.

My heart goes out to this child and his family members for what they are going through at this time. I wish this little boy the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Traffic Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were nine fatalities and 362 bicycle accidents in Riverside County. In Desert Hot Springs, three people died and seven were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Crash?

Based on this news report, there is very little information about how or why this car versus bicycle accident occurred. There are many unanswered questions here. Who was at fault? Where was the child riding the bike at the time? Was he crossing the street? Who had the right-of-way at the intersection?

Under California law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles. According to California Vehicle Code Section 21800 (a): "The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway."

Liability Issues

In this particular case, if the driver is determined to have been at fault, he or she can be held liable for the serious injuries caused to the child. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation and other related damages.

Car accident victims or their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable accident lawyer will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition at the roadway or intersection may have caused or contributed to the incident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can be held accountable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury claim against a governmental agency must be filed within 180 days of the incident.

Nick Venuto, 40, was killed and Baron Herdelin-Doherty, 51, was critically injured in a San Diego car accident after an out-of-control SUV careened into a bike path and struck the two men who were riding their bicycles. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the fatal bicycle accident occurred off State Route 56 in Rancho Penasquitos, the night of May 31, 2011.

California Highway Patrol officials say the driver of a 2003 Ford Escape SUV, identified as 27-year-old Sheena Saranita, was driving east at a speed of 65 to 80 mph when she began to change lanes. She then saw a vehicle in the far right lane, overreacted and steered the SUV hard to the right. The SUV went up an embankment, crashed into a fence and rolled over on the bike path, before hitting Venuto and Herdelin-Doherty. Venuto died at the scene and Herdelin-Doherty was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. He sustained broken hips, ribs and arms. Both bicyclists were wearing helmets. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Nick Venuto for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. The report states Venuto was a bioenergy executive and married father of two from Poway. Herdelin-Doherty is the CEO and President of the YMCA of San Diego County. Tragic! Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

San Diego Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to CHP's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 512 were injured in San Diego bicycle accidents. During that same year, there were seven fatalities and 959 injuries reported due to San Diego County bicycle accidents.

What Caused This Tragic Bike Crash?

Based on this news report, officials are saying that the driver of the SUV, Saranita, was not under the influence at the time. It is not, however, clear if she was traveling at an unsafe speed at the time or if she made an unsafe lane change. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: "No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property."

Liability Issues

I trust officials are also looking into whether Saranita was distracted, inattentive or otherwise negligent at the time. If she is determined to have been at fault, she can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Injured victims and families of deceased victims in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
