The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced this week that Hewlett-Packard (HP) has agreed to a settlement of $425,000 for their failure to report a product hazard in a timely manner. It is required by federal law that any and all dangers regarding a product are reported to the CPSC immediately. There was evidence that HP knowingly delayed reporting an issue with certain lithium-ion battery packs that were an unreasonable hazard to consumers.

It was reported that these battery packs, shipped with new HP computers and sold as spare parts, could overheat, which posed a burn and fire hazard. Nelson McWilliams, 54, an aide for Rep. Duncan Hunter, was killed in a San Diego car accident after he lost control of his pickup truck and crashed. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the fatal crash occurred the afternoon of December 20, 2011 in East County. California Highway Patrol officials say McWilliams was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck south on Wildcat Canyon Road near Muth Valley Road when the vehicle drifted and crashed into an embankment. Annette Lujan, 48, of Huntington Beach, was killed in an elevator accident after a 2,000-pound elevator dropped on top of her.
