I came across a moving and informative E-Book titled "Dangerous by Default," written by Anthony Solesky, father of dog bite victim Dominic Solesky, who was brutally mauled by a pit-bull in an alley near his home in Baltimore. The dog attack occurred on April 28, 2007. Dominic and two other boys were attacked by a pit-bull that broke free from its pen. The 77-page E-Book provides heart-rending, powerful details about the life-altering personal injuries, pain and suffering undergone by the boy. It also talks about the callousness of the dog owner who did not even stop to give a helping hand to the boy who was crawling in a pool of blood, shocked and traumatized by the horrific attack. The dog owner, in fact, went a step further and threatened one of the other boys, who was also injured in the attack.
Intense Pain and Suffering
The chapter about Dominic's injuries gives the reader an insider's view of the personal injuries, pain and suffering undergone by dog bite victims, many of whom are young children. In Dominic's case, he had a bite to the face just missing his left eye. His left cheek and the tip of his nose were hanging. Dominic also had puncture wounds and bites to the arms, chest and back. He had a life-threatening 2-cm tear to his femoral artery. The pit-bull had basically clamped on to Dominic's left leg, picked him up and shook him violently like a rag doll while dragging him in circles. I can imagine that it would be tough for an average reader even to get through the parts where the dad describes his son's cries of pain. Heartbreaking!
Lack of Sympathy or Support for the Real Victims
But what is infuriating is the reaction of the owner and the way the Baltimore County Heath Department turned this public health and safety issue into a referendum on dog owners' rights. The Solesky family is one of many American families who are the victims of such social injustice. Who was the victim here? The young boy who continues to suffer the consequences of the dog owner's negligence? Or the dog owner, who left a child bleeding and injured in an alleyway? Should dogs have more rights than human beings? In my opinion, absolutely not.
Protect your Rights
Solesky mainly points out in his writings that pit-bulls, whatever dog owners might say, are a "breed apart." I've mentioned in many of my blog posts based on various news reports involving pit-bull attacks that having one of these dogs in your home is like having a loaded gun. It may never go off. But if it does, the consequences can even be fatal. In one of his interviews to the media, Solesky says: "A lion is in the cat family, but I don't want it in my neighborhood." It is shameful that the city, instead of rallying behind the victims, made this into an issue of dog owners' rights and even put the Soleskys through the "dangerous dog" hearing, days after the attack, while Dominic was still in the hospital.
If you are a dog owner or if you live in any American neighborhood, Solesky's E-book is a must-read. It tells you the importance of protecting your legal rights and the rights of your loved ones. If you are a dog bite victim, you need an experienced personal injury lawyer– someone who will remain on your side, fight for your rights and look out for your best interests.
