A San Diego meat company has recalled 925 pounds of E. coli contaminated ground beef over serious California food poisoning concerns. According to a 10News report, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service officials said that no illnesses have been reported so far as a result of products sold by the San Diego Meat Co. This food recall involves 15-pound cases of ground beef patties and 10-pound bags of bulk ground beef produced between October 7 and October 12. This contaminated meat was apparently sold to San Diego County area caterers and restaurants. The owners of the San Diego Meat Co. have said that they have notified their customers about the E. coli contamination and that all the tainted products will be destroyed.

E. coli Infections Can Be Deadly

E. coli is a bacterium that is potentially deadly and typically causes serious personal injury. Symptoms of E. coli infections include severe abdominal cramping, vomiting and diarrhea with bloody stools. The elderly and young children are at the highest risk for becoming infected with E. coli and developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which can lead to serious kidney damage or even death.

I hope this contamination was caught early enough to avoid illnesses. But given the fact that this meat was distributed to local caterers and restaurants, I find it hard to believe that no one was sickened by this tainted meat. When contaminated products are supplied to caterers and restaurants, there is the potential for an outbreak. If you recently consumed beef in a San Diego area restaurant or catered event, and if you are experiencing symptoms of an E. coli infection, please get immediate medical attention.
