A 66-year-old man was killed in a Fresno car accident the morning of March 3, 2010 after he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a vehicle. According to a news report in the Fresno Bee, the man was riding on Trimmer Springs Road near Pine Flat Road, when the fatal injury accident occurred. The 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle went into the path of a westbound 1996 Ford Taurus driven by 54-year-old Susan Adams. The motorcyclist was ejected from his bike. He was transported to a local hospital where he died. Adams was uninjured. California Highway Patrol officials said drugs or alcohol do not seem to have been a factor in this fatal motorcycle accident.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased motorcyclist for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

Fresno County Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records Systems (SWITRS), there were five fatalities and 71 injuries involving motorcycle accidents in Fresno County. Also, countywide, car accidents claimed 127 lives and injured 3,323 people in 2008.

Accident Causes

Based on this news report, it is not clear what caused the motorcyclist to lose control and crash. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical problem in his Harley Davidson? Was this person an experienced motorcyclist or was he just starting to ride motorcycles? Was there a dangerous condition on that roadway that caused this tragic accident? I trust investigators are looking into these and other factors to determine how or why this fatal motorcycle crash occurred. If the news report is accurate, the driver of the Ford Taurus could not avoid hitting the motorcyclist.

Auto Product Liability Issues

In such cases, victims' families should consider consulting an experienced Fresno personal injury lawyer who has successfully handled motorcycle accident cases as well as auto product defect cases. The victim's family would be well-advised to preserve the motorcycle in its crashed condition, in tact, so it can be carefully examined by an expert for vehicle defects, mechanical malfunctions and other evidence.

If the accident was caused by a vehicle defect, the manufacturer of the defective product could be held liable. If the accident was caused by a dangerous or defective roadway, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could be held liable as well. Please remember that any such claim against a California governmental entity must be filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
