A few passengers of a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train were injured in a San Francisco train accident the morning of December 9, 2009, CBS News reports. There were 75 passengers when the train derailed near a downtown Oakland station. One man suffered a seizure and another sustained back injuries. Officials say no serious injuries were reported as a result of this accident. BART officials said the five-car train was traveling at about 15 to 30 mph in an underground tunnel when it suddenly derailed. A bicyclist has been injured in a Newport Beach car accident, after he was hit by a car at the intersection of Jamboree Road and Bison Avenue the morning of December 9, 2009, The Orange County Register reports. The driver of the car did not stop and left the scene of the accident. The bicycle rider, who was estimated to be in his mid-40s, was taken to an area trauma unit. Two children, ages 4 and 6, sustained serious injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after they were struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the injury pedestrian accident occurred the morning of December 8, 2009 in the 7600 block of Corbin Avenue in Reseda. Both children were seriously hurt and were airlifted to a Los Angeles hospital. However, both are now listed in stable condition. The driver that hit the children fled the scene of the accident. Police are looking for the hit-and-run vehicle and driver.

Thomas Klopfstein, 58, was fatally injured in a San Diego car accident after a pickup truck driven by a Chula Vista city councilman struck him as he was crossing the road the morning of December 3, 2009. According to a 10 news report, Klopfstein was walking on Campo Road near Community Building Road at the time of the pedestrian-car crash. The driver, Rudy Ramirez, 49, told investigators that he did not see Klopfstein walk in front of his eastbound Toyota Tundra because the sun was in his eyes. Ramirez has not been cited for the accident.

This trend mirrors nationwide deaths attributed to motorcycle crashes – from 2,294 in 1998 to 5,154 in 2007. The article gives an account of one local resident who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when a teen driver turned left in front of her Honda dual sport bike. A 9-year-old boy sustained fatal injuries in an Orange County car accident after he was struck by a vehicle while attempting to ride across the street. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the boy was riding his bike home from school the afternoon of December 3, 2008 at the intersection of Orangewood Avenue and Loara Street in Anaheim. The driver of a raised Ford F-250 truck was headed westbound on Orangewood Avenue and stopped at the stop sign, at the intersection, Anaheim police said. Seeing the truck stop, the boy attempted to get across the street. But the driver of the pickup truck failed to see the boy, started driving and hit him. The child was taken to an area hospital in critical condition, but died shortly afterward. The boy was wearing a helmet.

Los Angeles Car Accident Injures Two

Two drivers suffered injuries in a Los Angeles car accident after an SUV crashed into another car at a street intersection in Torrance, California. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the accident occurred the morning of December 2, 2009 at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and 178th Street. The two vehicles collided and the SUV was pushed into a building in the 17700 block of Crenshaw. No one in the building was injured. Both the drivers were taken to an area hospital with injuries. The extent or seriousness of their injuries is not yet known.

Elizabeth Amstone, 18, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident after the driver of the car in which she was a passenger lost control and crashed the vehicle in Irwindale. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the car accident occurred the morning of December 1, 2009 after a 1995 Acura Integra, driven by Deshawn Johnson, 17, heading southbound on the 605 Freeway near Arrow Highway, veered to the right and on to a dirt embankment before rolling over on the shoulder. Amstone was ejected and fell partially on to the far right lane, California Highway Patrol officials said. It is not clear how fast the car was going or why it went off the road. CHP officials are not sure whether Amstone was wearing her seatbelt. She died at the scene while Deshawn escaped with minor injuries to his left hand and right leg.
