Three people were injured in a Riverside car accident involving a suspected drunk driver the morning of January 18, 2010. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, the injury crash involving two cars occurred on the eastbound 10 Freeway in Palm Desert near Washington Street. One of the vehicles burst into flames and occupants in the other vehicle were trapped inside. California Highway Patrol officials used heavy equipment to rescue the victims from the vehicle. Three injured victims were taken to an area hospital. However, officials say the injuries are not life-threatening. The driver of one of the vehicles has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
It's indeed a relief to find out that no one was critically injured in this car crash. Another news report states that one of the victims was bleeding heavily. I hope none of these victims sustained major injuries. I wish then all the very best for a quick and full recovery. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.
DUI Car Accidents
Four people died and 22 were injured in alcohol-related car accidents in Palm Desert, according to CHP's 2007 traffic accident statistics. Countywide, 129 deaths and 1,279 injuries were reported as a result of DUI crashes during the same year.
DUI Laws and Liability Issues
If the details in the news reports are accurate, it appears that one of the drivers may have been impaired and possibly speeding at the time of the accident. Both, driving under the influence and speeding are serious violations of the law. Under California Vehicle Code section 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is against the law to driver with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher.
In such cases, it would be in the best interests of injured victims to seek the advise of an experienced California personal injury lawyer, who can help protect their legal rights and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. In such cases, a skilled car accident lawyer should advise victims about how their car insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault motorist does not have car insurance or sufficient insurance coverage.
