Fatal Motorcycle Accidents Continue to Rise in California
December 5th, 2009 | JohnMotorcycle accident fatalities locally and throughout California continue to climb steadily, according to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun. The number of motorcycle accident deaths in California rose from 204 in 1998 to 560 in 2008 – a 175 percent increase in just 10 years. This trend mirrors nationwide deaths attributed to motorcycle crashes – from 2,294 in 1998 to 5,154 in 2007. The article gives an account of one local resident who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when a teen driver turned left in front of her Honda dual sport bike. She sustained torn ligaments, whiplash and serious bruising as a result of the crash.
Motorcycle Accident Causes
But officials say that is only one side of the story. It is true that a number of drivers do not look for motorcyclists and many times, forget that they do share the road with motorcyclists. However, a lot of times, motorcycle riders are also at fault for either speeding, lane-splitting, driving under the influence or riding a motorcycle without sufficient training.
Motorcycle ridership has increased significantly in the last few years when gas prices have skyrocketed. There's no question that motorcycle riders have been able to save a lot of money on gas. But as it turns out, they've been doing it at the expense of their safety and also, the safety of other road users. Officials say that many new riders are not getting licensed. Dealerships that sell motorcycles often don't ask riders for proof of motorcycle licensing, so many just ride their bikes off the lot without a license or insurance and often times, without proper training. Apparently, checking for licensing is not a requirement to sell a motorcycle in California although it is mandatory to ride a motorcycle in the state.
Safety Gear is Important
The increase in motorcycle accident fatalities and injuries is being seen consistently throughout Southern California in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and San Diego counties. Serious injuries, especially catastrophic injuries, can be prevented if riders wear protective gear, such as full-face helmet. It is also important to wear leather gear in order to prevent painful road rash.
