A 20-year-old skateboarder sustained critical injuries the afternoon of December 14, 2009 in a Riverside car accident, after a vehicle struck him at a busy intersection in Temecula. The North County Times reports that a 17-year-old girl in a Honda Accord, was making a left on to westbound Rancho California Road from northbound Ynez Road, as the skateboarder was crossing Rancho California. The man was then hit by left front side of the Accord. The teen driver of the Honda was not injured. The skateboarder underwent surgery at a local hospital where he is still listed in critical condition. The driver has not been cited or arrested pending an investigation.

I sympathize with the family and friends of this young man, who must be going through an extremely difficult time. I hope and pray that this victim makes it through his injuries. The road to his recovery may be long, but I wish him the very best for a complete recovery. He will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Riverside Pedestrian Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol's 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one fatality and seven injuries were reported as a result of car accidents in Temecula, California. In Riverside County, 43 people died and 393 were injured due to pedestrian accidents during the same year. Also, countywide, 279 deaths and 9,925 injuries occurred in 2007 involving car accidents.

It appears to me, based on this news report, the young woman who was driving the Honda Accord did not see the skateboarder crossing the road. There are a few questions that come up here. Who had the green light at the time? Who had the right-of-way? Why did the teenager fail to see the skateboarder? Was she distracted? Was she speeding or otherwise negligent at the time of the collision. Where exactly was the skateboarder crossing the street? Was he in a crosswalk?

Contacting a Catastrophic Injury Lawyer

Seriously injured victims and their families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced California catastrophic injury lawyer, who will look out for their best interests and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. Victims may seek compensation to cover medical expenses, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and even long-term, round-the-clock care, when they have been catastrophically injured.
