Erin Joyce, 19, was killed in an Orange County car accident, after her car hit a tree and crashed. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, Joyce sustained fatal injuries after her Honda Accord struck a tree in the center divider on University Drive between Ridgeline and Michelson the evening of December 14, 2009. Irvine police officials said Joyce died at the scene. This is the second time over the last few days, in the city of Irvine, that a driver died after hitting a tree in a center divider. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Erin Joyce. I offer my deepest condolences to her family and friends. Please keep them in your prayers.

Please note that three lanes drop down to lanes in just about that spot. Many drivers bypass long lines by racing down in the third lane and forcing their way in to the other two lanes(often others are turning into the parking lot which force those racing drivers to slam on their own brakes or quickly change lanes.)
The drivers in the normal two lanes often have to swerve or slam on their brakes in order to avoid an accident. I would think it entirely likely, given the time of the accident and the high traffic, that such behavior might have caused this driver to swerve and drift over the divider.
