Three people injured in a car accident caused by tire tread separation, have been identified by authorities as Susan Baxter, 60, her 5-year-old granddaughter Eleanor Baxter and a big rig driver, Izaak Davis, 37. The Red Bluff Daily News reports that the major injury crash occurred the afternoon of August 6, 2010 on the 5 Freeway at Sunset Hills Drive in Tehama County. Baxter lost control of her Ford F-350 pickup truck after the tire tread on her right front tire came off. She crashed into a tractor-trailer driven by Davis. Susan Baxter sustained major injuries while Eleanor and Davis suffered less severe injuries.

My heart goes out to everyone who was injured in this crash. I wish them all the very best for a swift and full recovery. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Tire Tread Separation

Tire defects, whether in passenger cars, motorcycles or other vehicles, can definitely lead to serious injury accidents. When tire tread separation occurs in a van, SUV or light truck, it can have devastating consequences because these are vehicles that are prone to rollovers. Whether the defect is related to tire pressure or tire tread separation, when a vehicle's tire fails, the driver has very little control over his or her vehicle. Even an experienced driver will not be able to control his or her car if the tire tread separation occurs suddenly – especially if it happens at freeway speeds.

Auto Product Liability Issues

In this case, I would be curious to find out if the accident occurred due to an auto product defect – specifically, a tire defect. If the tire tread separation that occurred in this case is proven to be the result of a manufacturing or design defect, then, the auto maker or the manufacturer of the defective tire can be held liable for Baxter's major injuries and losses.

It would be in the best interests of injured victims and their families to preserve the vehicle in its current, crashed condition, so it can be carefully examined by an expert for product defects, malfunctions, design defects and other evidence. A reputed California personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record with auto product liability cases will be able to give victims more information about how to pursue their legal rights.
