California Car Accident Reports

A man was seriously injured in a San Bernardino car accident after he was struck by two cars while crossing Highway 18 in Apple Valley. According to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun, a driver was going east on Highway 18 at Kiowa Road the night of February 28, 2010 when a pedestrian walked in front of his car. Officials said the impact tossed the man into the air. A San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputy driving behind the first vehicle also hit the pedestrian. Both drivers stopped to help the injured pedestrian. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of major injuries. I recently came across a powerful video on YouTube posted by Ron Melancon, founder of the organization, Dangerous Trailers.org. This video really drives home the point that runaway trailers can cause devastating car accidents that result in catastrophic injuries and loss of life. A 21-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in an Irvine car accident the morning of February 16, 2010 while crossing at an intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the accident occurred at the intersection of Yale Avenue and Southwood. Two people have been hospitalized with injuries after a car accident in which they were struck by an elderly woman who was driving her vehicle the wrong way on the Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo. According to a KSBY news report, the injury collision occurred when 87-year-old Dorothy Nekervis entered the Highway 101 from the San Luis Bay Drive off-ramp the night of January 27, 2010. Kathryn Norman, 60, sustained fatal injuries in a car accident the afternoon of January 19, 2010 near Feather Falls, California. According to a news report in the Chico Enterprise Record, Norman was driving a 1994 GMC south on Lumpkin Road near Long Point Road, when she collided head-on with a 2004 Nissan driven by 52-year-old James Veerkamp. California Highway Patrol officials say they are still trying to determine who caused this fatal accident and if wet weather conditions may have played a part. Motorcycle accident fatalities locally and throughout California continue to climb steadily, according to a news report in the San Bernardino Sun. The number of motorcycle accident deaths in California rose from 204 in 1998 to 560 in 2008 – a 175 percent increase in just 10 years. This trend mirrors nationwide deaths attributed to motorcycle crashes – from 2,294 in 1998 to 5,154 in 2007. The article gives an account of one local resident who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident when a teen driver turned left in front of her Honda dual sport bike. She sustained torn ligaments, whiplash and serious bruising as a result of the crash.

A man sustained injuries in a car accident in Orange County after he lost control of his Ford Explorer SUV, which was towing a camping trailer. The Orange County Register reports that the accident occurred the morning of November 27, 2009 on the northbound 241 toll road at Los Alisos Boulevard in Rancho Santa Margarita. The Explorer rolled over with the trailer. One person, a passenger, was taken to the hospital. The extent of his injuries is not known. California Highway Patrol officials are looking into why the driver of the Ford Explorer lost control.

Two women sustained critical injuries in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of November 20, 2009 after their vehicles collided near a city intersection. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the accident occurred on Citrus Avenue near East Gladstone Street in Azusa when a Nissan pickup truck and a Dodge Neon collided. The Neon's driver, identified as a 51-year-old Covina woman, was transported to a local hospital as was the driver of the Nissan. Both women were listed in critical condition. Two girls and a boy – ages 16, 8 and 7 respectively – were passengers in the pickup and were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
