Kyle Lawrence, a 17-year-old senior at Bandon High school was seriously injured in an Oregon car accident Friday morning and is currently in a medically induced coma.

The Bandon Western World Reported that the car accident happened along U.S. Highway 101 at about 9:30 a.m. when Kyle was hit by a minivan while crossing the road.

According to the Oregon State Police, Kyle was walking on the shoulder of the highway when
he was hit by a northbound 1991 Pontiac van driven by 51-year-old Douglas Cypert.

Kyle sustained a head injury and two breaks in his left leg below the knee. He also
broke his pinky finger and thumb on his left hand and also suffered facial cuts which
required stitches. He was flown to Portland's Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Health Center
after the car accident.

I join Kyle's friends and families in praying for his speedy recovery. I understand that
Kyle is a very well-liked student at Bandon High School and is a member of their cross
country and soccer team. In fact, he had just completed soccer practice when the car
accident occurred. It appears that his friends and family are rallying around Kyle and are
arranging many fundraising activities to help his family pay for his medical expenses.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), 52 pedestrians were killed in
car accidents in 2008, while 576 others were injured. In total, there were 610 crashes
involving pedestrians last year in all of Oregon.

Details of the pedestrian accident are still vague but Oregon State Police troopers are
currently conducting an investigation.
