A worker in Simi Valley who suffered fatal job injuries after a powerful explosion has been identified as 28-year-old Tyson Larson. The Ventura County Star reports that Larson died from multiple blunt force injuries. The accident occurred the afternoon of June 17, 2010 at Realm Industries, described as an alternative fuel plant. Officials say Larson was in the building with two others when the explosion occurred. But the two workers were able to exit the business without sustaining any serious injuries.
Powerful Explosion
County Hazmat officials have pinned down the cause to a pressure vessel container that was used to heat water. The company was apparently attempting to generate steam to break hydrogen and oxygen molecules to produce alternative fuel.
I offer my heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Tyson Larson for their profound loss. Apparently, the building was damages and the blast blew a hole through the roof. This is an explosion, which had the potential to cause serious personal injuries to several people and even passers by or neighbors. It is fortunate that no one else was injured. Larson's family will be in my prayers.
Causes and Liability Issues
I trust officials from the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health and carefully analyzing the scientific process during which things went wrong here. Officials say there was an earlier explosion in the same facility just two years ago. Cal/OSHA officials will likely investigate the safety measures employed by the company, training procedures and whether there were any issues of negligence or defective products.
In workplace accident cases, families of deceased workers will receive workers compensation benefits from the employer. However, a experienced Ventura personal injury lawyer will also be able to advise them about other options such as filing a third-party claim against a negligent party other than an employer. Third party claims are often filed against contractors, sub-contractors or the manufacturer of a defective product. Such claims are usually worth a lot more to families of deceased victims than workers compensation benefits, which can be woefully inadequate in cases where the accident result in the loss of, say, a family's primary wage-earner.
What are some of the major challenges workers and their families face in the aftermath of an on-the-job injury?
